Gale L. West
Gale L. West, 96, died Tuesday, Jan. 26, 2010, under the care of Ministry Home Hospice Care at the Stevens Point Care Center.
He was a former Village of Plover President and county board representative.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at the Plover-Shuda Family Funeral Home and Crematory. Rev. Howard Hintzman will officiate. Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday, and again from 10 a.m. until the time of services Friday all at the funeral home.
Gale was born April 18, 1913 in Lind Center, the first child of Pope and Ethel (Jacklin) West. He attended school in Lind Center and later helped his father delivering milk to residents of Waupaca.
As a young man he assisted his uncle Elwyn West in his aircraft business and when could not get his pilots license due to his eyesight, he moved to Dishman, WA. It was there along with his uncle Ben Jacklin and his three sons (Lyle, Owen, and Arden) together formed the Jacklin seed company. Gale entered the United States Army on Feb. 24, 1941 in Spokane, WA. He served his country as a Tec 4 and was involved in many battles and campaigns including: Tunisian, Naples, Foggia, Rome, Arno, Southern France, Rhineland, and Central Europe, He earned the European African Middle Eastern Medal, Good Conduct Medal, and the American Defense Service Medal. He was honorably discharged on Sept. 18, 1945 from Ft. Lewis, WA.
On November 18, 1946 he married LoRayne Tuttle (Rhodes) and adopted her children, Terry and Brenda. They later divorced. In 1955, he left the Jacklin Seed Company and Washington and returned to Wisconsin. He was involved with construction work and helped build West Dairy milking parlor.
On July 2, 1960 he married Evelyn (Page) Eickendorf and they developed Weslan subdivisions in Plover and Grand Rapids. While residents of Plover: Gale served on numerous boards and committees in which he received many honors and was President of the Village of Plover and also was their county board representative.
In later years, they loved to travel in the U.S. and Canada with their motor home. Winters were spent in Florida, Texas, Arizona or California.
Survivors include daughter Brenda (West) Wooldridge, Newberg, OR; three step daughters: Donna Adamski, Plover; Dorene (Jerry) Chojnacki, Whiting; Linda Meronk, Plover; and stepson, Jack (Linda) Eickendorf, Tn of Hull.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Evelyn in 1996, son Terry, and son-in-laws Emil Adamski and Daniel Meronk, step grandson Daren Adamski, three brothers: Arlyn, Merrill, and Clifton. One sister Ida Weller.
Memorials in lieu of flowers can be made to the Boys and Girls Club of Plover.
